Senior Regulatory Specialist – Anti Financial Crime

Job Purpose

Our client in the financial services sector is seeking a Senior Specialist: Anti-Financial Crime Portfolio to support regulatory engagement, policy development, and stakeholder coordination within the financial crime and market conduct environment.

The role focuses on regulatory analysis, industry engagement, advocacy support, governance oversight, and strategic stakeholder facilitation across financial crime-related matters.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferred) in Law, Business, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in banking, compliance, regulatory, or market conduct roles.
  • In-depth knowledge of the South African banking environment.

Technical Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of Anti-Financial Crime legislation and regulatory frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of financial crime practices within the banking sector.
  • Familiarity with relevant South African legislation including financial crime and anti-corruption frameworks.
  • Strong stakeholder management capability, including executive-level engagement.
  • Proven experience in workshop facilitation.
  • Excellent drafting, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience representing organisations at committees and industry forums.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory and legal issues in the banking environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Anti-Financial Crime Portfolio Management

  • Formulate and drive industry positions on regulatory and supervisory issues.
  • Identify legislation, regulation, guidance, and international standards requiring industry comment.
  • Collect, compile and consolidate member input for submissions.
  • Draft high-quality submissions and position papers.
  • Prepare materials for committees, sub-committees, task teams, and working groups.
  • Proactively identify initiatives impacting the banking industry in relation to financial crime.
  • Stay updated on applicable legislation, regulatory developments, and international standards.
  • Attend workshops, webinars, and industry training.
  • Drive portfolio projects in line with defined performance objectives.
  • Chair and facilitate committees and task groups to achieve industry consensus.
  • Manage administrative responsibilities including stakeholder communication and coordination.

2. Meeting Facilitation

  • Facilitate workshops and stakeholder meetings to gather industry input.
  • Create collaborative environments that encourage engagement and decision-making.
  • Guide discussions to ensure balanced participation.
  • Drive consensus and document majority/minority views.
  • Record action items and manage follow-up on outstanding matters.

3. Stakeholder Management

  • Engage with high-profile stakeholders including executive boards, directors, regulators, and industry leaders.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local and global counterparts.
  • Represent the banking industry’s perspectives to associations, suppliers, member institutions, government departments, parliament, and regulators.
  • Represent the organisation at conferences, seminars, and industry engagements.

4. Governance & Market Conduct Support

  • Monitor and interpret financial crime regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.
  • Provide research and regulatory support to internal teams.
  • Support litigation processes where required, including briefing and managing external legal counsel.
  • Assist with negotiation of agreements when necessary.

4. Thought Leadership & Advocacy

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies aligned to industry objectives.
  • Build consensus across member institutions on regulatory positions.
  • Balance regulatory concerns with operational, compliance, technological, and cost considerations.
  • Enhance service offerings and value provided to members.

5. Organisational Support

  • Contribute to a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Support implementation of strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate across divisions and identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Provide ongoing support to the Manager: Legislation and Regulatory Oversight.
