Business Development Manager: Battery Energy Storage Systems

Objective & Purpose

We are seeking a commercially astute, technically credible, and highly connected professional with a proven track record in the energy, power, renewable energy, or infrastructure sectors. This role is ideal for an individual who has successfully developed markets, secured major projects, and built strategic relationships across the South African energy landscape.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in expanding the company's Battery Energy Storage Systems portfolio, identifying and closing high-value opportunities, and establishing long-term partnerships with key industry stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Business Management, Commerce, or a related field.
  • Postgraduate qualification (MBA, MDP, or equivalent) will be advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years' experience in Business Development, Sales, Key Account Management, or Commercial Management within:
    • Energy
    • Power Infrastructure
    • Renewable Energy
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Energy Storage
    • Industrial Solutions
  • Demonstrated experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), power systems, renewable energy projects, or related infrastructure solutions.
  • Experience engaging with executive-level stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Strong understanding of the South African energy market and regulatory environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Market Development & Industry Leadership

  • Drive market expansion initiatives within the battery and energy storage sector.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory developments, project pipelines, and funding opportunities.
  • Identify emerging opportunities across utilities, renewable energy developers, mining, industrial, commercial, and infrastructure sectors.
  • Provide strategic market intelligence to support business growth and investment decisions.

Business Development & Sales Growth

  • Identify, originate, and secure new business opportunities within the BESS and energy solutions market.
  • Develop and execute strategic account plans to increase market share and revenue.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of qualified opportunities.
  • Lead customer engagement from initial opportunity identification through to contract award.

Stakeholder & Relationship Management

  • Establish and strengthen relationships with key decision-makers across:
    • Independent Power Producers (IPPs)
    • EPC Contractors
    • Utilities
    • Mining Houses
    • Industrial and Commercial Energy Users
    • Consultants and Advisors
    • Financial Institutions and Investors
  • Position the business as a preferred partner for energy storage solutions.

Technical & Commercial Solution Development

  • Collaborate with engineering and technical teams to develop fit-for-purpose energy storage solutions.
  • Understand and communicate BESS applications including:
    • Peak Shaving
    • Load Shifting
    • Backup Power
    • Renewable Integration
    • Ancillary Grid Services
  • Participate in solution design discussions and support technical-commercial proposals.

Commercial Management

  • Lead commercial negotiations and contribute to contract structuring.
  • Develop commercially viable business cases and pricing strategies.
  • Evaluate project profitability, risk, warranties, performance guarantees, service agreements, and contractual obligations.
  • Support successful deal closure while protecting company margins.

Pipeline & Forecast Management

  • Maintain accurate sales forecasts and opportunity tracking.
  • Ensure disciplined CRM management and reporting.
  • Provide regular business development updates and market feedback.
