Purpose

The Environmental Specialist Water Management is responsible for water (surface and groundwater) related risk and responsibilities, monitoring and managing water consumption, water use, impact of polluted water and mineral waste within the mine and surrounding environment. This includes procedures, systems, and reporting to minimize and contain water contamination.

Minimum requirements

  • Tertiary education (degree/diploma) in Geohydrology/ Hydrology/ Environmental science (Water as major subject)/ Water Engineering, or Equivalent.
  • 3 Years’ experience in Mine Water Management with focus on Geohydrology. (Preferably within the mining or any other industry where Water is a major risk).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • ISO 14001, 9001, 45001 Internal Auditor Certificates.
  • Knowledge of relevant Environmental Legislation.
  • Relevant software programmes like GIS, Incident, and action management. Water modelling and related.  
  • Qualification in Project management will be advantageous.

Main duties

  • Engaging with authorities on management and maintenance of Water Use License (WUL) conditions and other water related matters. 
  • Amendment and renewal of the WUL when required, including any new applications. 
  • Reporting on water management related issues at intervals set by the company and Government Authorities. 
  • Managing water quality monitoring network as per requirements of WUL conditions, EMPR commitment, legal and other requirements. 
  • Ensuring legal requirements are complied with in terms of the National Water Act and other relevant legislation. 
  • Managing environmental water and mineral waste risks and responsibilities in line with company conditions, commitments, and obligations.
  • Managing water related projects.
  • Conducting first and second party audits to determine conformance to the company's SHEQ MS.
  • Maintaining a culture of compliance to SHEQ issues across the business, with focus on continuous improvement on water and mineral waste issues. 
  • Providing guidance, support and coaching to operations regarding water and mineral waste management and compliance to WUL conditions. 
  • Maintaining Integrated Water and Waste Management Plan for the business. 
  • Available for Appointment in terms of Occupational Health & Safety Act and SHEQ responsibilities. 
  • Identifying of environmental risk on water (surface and groundwater) and mineral waste. 
  • Categorizing and prioritizing the risk in terms of severity.
  • Observing and complying with road regulations.
  • Ensuring internal SHEQ processes and procedures are complied with.

Key competencies

  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Must be system orientated.
  • Computer Literacy.
  • Ability to analyze: Water chemistry data analysis and evaluation.
  • Ability to effectively engage with stakeholders especially government officials.
