Purpose

The position is responsible for identification of ground conditions with appropriate support recommendation and ensuring compliance to specification for ground control Strategies. This includes the present development ends. 

This is a 2 Year Fixed Term Contract.

Minimum requirements

  • BSc Mining Engineering/ BSc (Hons) Geology. 
  • Chamber of Mines Rock Mechanics 2 Papers (Hard Rock). 
  • Strata Control Certificate. 
  • Surface mining experience Advantageous. 
  • At least five years’ experience in hard rock underground mining environment (Rock engineering). 
  • Advanced Computer literacy (MS Office, Map3D, Examined 2D & 3D, J Block and other Geotechnical Software Packages).

Main duties

  • Ensuring post-blast geotechnical inspections and heading assessments are done. 
  • Maintaining and reviewing COP’s, GCMP, SWP and Standards. 
  • Supervising SCO’s and Operators. 
  • Maintaining MOSH Adoption initiatives. 
  • SAP Bookings and Support Design. 
  • Preparing and controlling the section’s annual budget by forecasting operating costs and monitoring expenditure on a monthly basis. 
  • Developing and implementing cost efficiency programs. 
  • Maintaining and improving safety, health and environmental standards and practices. 
  • Conducting investigations, monthly audits and presenting findings regarding incidents to ensure effective problem resolution. 
  • Performing training of safety modules. 
  • Conducting risk assessments. 
  • Providing on-the-job training on rockfall hazards and strata control. 
  • Ensuring that all Headings scheduled for Support rehabilitation are actioned to the relevant personnel and planned for completion. 
  • Carrying out quality control check of the rehabilitation works. 
  • Ensuring installation of monitoring instrument is done as per project schedule. 

Key competencies

  • Sound understanding of geotechnical issues pertaining to underground mining.  
  • Good understanding of hard-rock. 
  • Ability to fault find and provide guidance to problem solving.  
  • Ability to work under pressure and strenuous conditions (ability to work shifts and standby). 
  • Well-developed presentation skills.  
  • Well organised and systematic.
