Purpose

The core purpose of the role is to lead the category and proactively source business requirements through developing and executing Category sourcing strategy and extracting value from the spend. This includes translating the strategic sourcing strategy and policies for the Category in order to create and unlock optimal value for the business.

Minimum Requirements

  • BCom Commerce Law / Engineering / Supply Chain Management/Transport & Logistics and other relevant degrees.
  • 5 - 12 years in strategic sourcing/ Procurement / inventory management in the category or a commercial vehicle / logistics / transport / supply chain environment.
  • 5 years’ experience in a senior and complex strategic sourcing role.
  • 3-5 years management experience.
  • Proven track record of strategic supplier relations management.
  • Proven track record of working within cross-functional teams, while successfully delivering a challenging benefits and capability building agenda.
  • Computer, technology and systems skills i.e. ERP inventory/stock management software.
  • Postgraduate MBA or equivalent related business management qualification is an added advantage.
  • CIPS membership and/or accreditation (MCIPS preferably) is an added advantage.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Valid Passport.

Main Duties

1. Strategy execution

  • Develop and execute Category sourcing strategy and implement the relevant policies and procedures for cost effective and efficient strategic sourcing and supplier management.
  • Perform a need analysis through engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the sourcing of goods and service to achieve efficiencies by cutting waste out of the supply chain.
  • Drive transformation agenda by incorporating and implementing ESD strategy during the category sourcing strategy.
  • Effectively execute the sourcing event e.g. RFX.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage economies of scale and develop proposals and recommendations for consideration and approval by the appropriate leads in the business.
  • Lead and contribute to business initiatives that are designed to improve supply chain efficiency, maintain product quality standards, and reduce costs.
  • Evaluate and understand market conditions in order to develop competitive sourcing strategies to control costs.
  • Ensure internal & external Category profiling .
  • Develop relevant category sourcing strategy and acquire relevant approval

2. Financial Targets

  • Identifying and execute Value opportunities, cost reduction savings opportunities and sourcing execution pipeline through strategic sourcing methodology.
  • Contribute to the development of, and ensure the achievement of the agreed financial targets for the strategic sourcing category.
  • Develop and implement tactics to extract value from the spend and unlock optimal value for the Division.
  • Implement Benefits tracking & monitoring.
  • Drive the realisation of savings, supply efficiency, quality, and process improvements.
  • Contribute to the business budgeting process by providing goods and service pricing and unit rates.

3. Contract management

  • Develop, manage and deploy high value contracts to ensure the business meets its contractual obligations and derives the desired value.
  • Implement Contract compliance monitoring.
  • Identify and manage risks that may arise through the operation of the contract and implement robust financial and operational controls.
  • Conduct fact-based negotiation to negotiate the best quality, delivery, and price with suppliers for products and services, and compile regular value-creation reports demonstrating cost savings, using fact based negotiation.
  • Monitor volume thresholds/economies of scale and exercise negotiation leverage on price.

4. Supplier Management

  • Conduct fact-based negotiation with suppliers to enhance suppliers value proposition.
  • Supplier relationship management to capture relevant innovation and mitigate supply risks.
  • Manage supplier performance to ensure delivery on SLAs (CSI rating using survey methodologies).
  • Collaborate with the Transformation Manager to integrate the business and B-BBEE requirements to identify, evaluate and develop / improve the supplier database; ensure that the B-BBEE enterprise and supplier development requirements are prioritised.
  • Ensure that the B-BBBEE credentials of suppliers are current and support the business and transformation objectives.
  • Regularly monitor and ensure the alignment between suppliers’ operational performance, compliance with the strategic sourcing policy and the company's values and standards.
  • Analyse product usage trends and determine consistency of product usage to maximise cost and quality efficiencies.
  • Build and maintain strong supportive and mutually beneficial relationships with operational and functional management and their suppliers.
  • Analyse and report on supplier trends to ensure relevance and market intelligence to the business.

5. Reporting, Risk, Ethics and Compliance

  • Track identified, captured and realised cost reduction savings and provide reporting. 
  • Ensure that the legal, regulatory and policy requirements and complied with by the business and its suppliers.
  • Identify and remove potential barriers to the successful implementation of category strategies, and manage internal stakeholders to ensure understanding and alignment.
  • Contribute to the risk register and manage the strategic sourcing and supplier management risks in accordance with the business requirements.
  • Produce, implement and maintain internal strategic sourcing / supplier management documentation.

6. Team performance and continuous improvement

  • Ensure that the strategic sourcing and supplier management team is optimally structured and has the requisite skills and experience.
  • Manage the team in line with the business Integrated Employee Value Model and drive a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and collaboration with other parts of the business.
  • Implement projects to improve systems and champion BBS in category.
  • Develop commitment and a culture of ethical behaviour and practices.

Competencies and Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of strategic sourcing networks within the logistics, supply chain and transport industry.
  • Demonstrated broad understanding of the content, processes and delivery channels in the field of the assigned category.
  • Expert understanding of strategic sourcing commercial value proposition.
  • Deep understanding of strategic sourcing and supply chain management best practices and risks such as counterfeiting, bribery and corruption, disruptive technologies, cyber attack.
  • Expertise in Total Cost of Ownership Analysis and stakeholder analysis & mapping. Understanding the impact of mergers and acquisitions.
  • Sound understanding of business and transport related legal and regulatory aspects governing strategic sourcing i.e National Road Traffic Act, OHAS, Sustainability and Environmental Affairs Act, B-BBEE Act.
  • Well versed in B-BBEE codes, supplier management requirements and tender processes.
  • Financial and commercial acumen.
  • Savings tracking methodologies and reporting. 
  • Techniques for stakeholder mapping, value stream analysis, cost modelling, network optimisation modelling.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to influence, persuade and convince at all levels (technical and operational). 
  • Expert negotiation skills and well-developed listening skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for relationship management, networking and consultation. 
  • Strong ability to interpret numerical information. 
  • Highly developed EQ skills and sensitivity to diversity to deal with ambiguities, conflict and adversarial relationships and to work with cross-functional teams and build relationships across multiple functions, countries, regions and cultures.
  •  Critical and analytical thinking skills to analyse and diagnose requirements, assess potential and risks associated with supplier and market changes, interpret data, and solve relatively complex problem through sound judgments. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and drive tasks to completion in a fixed time-frame and in a pressured environment through highly effective time management, planning and organisation skills.
