Purpose

The Superintendent Workshop will be responsible for providing leadership and technical expertise over four central workshops at the mine. Boilershop – heavy duty steel fabrication, erection and repairs. Riggers Workshop – Site wide rigging, general lifting and maintenance of lifting equipment. Mechanical workshop – component manufacturing and repairs/overhaul of equipment. Light Support Equipment Workshop –mobile machinery service, repairs and fleet control. Compressed air reticulation infrastructure maintenance, inspections and operation. Lifting equipment specification, maintenance and inspections. Trackless and Track bound mobile equipment specifications, inspections and lifecycle management.

Minimum requirements

  • BSc Engineering/National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. 
  • Government Certificate of Competency (Mines and works). 
  • Registration with Professional affiliates (ECSA, AMRE). 
  • Registration with DMRE as a Mentor. 
  • 5 Years engineering experience in the maintenance field in a heavy engineering environment of which 3 years should have been in a supervisory capacity, preferably in the mining industry.

Main duties

  • Maintaining and improving safety, health and environmental standards and practices. 
  • Auditing compliance to maintenance standards and plans, and address deviations. 
  • Identifying problem areas impacting on quality and establish corrective measures. 
  • Ensuring the company's standards are adhered to in all activities. 
  • Setting up and maintaining systems to effectively control the flow of jobs through the workshop without building unnecessary inventory, on time and to the correct quality and specification. 
  • Preparing and controlling the section’s annual budget by forecasting operating costs and monitoring expenditure on a monthly basis.  
  • Providing input into the development of an overall Engineering Department Maintenance plan. 
  • Developing optimum inspections and maintenance schedules for the section’s equipment/machinery and facilities, including a replacement plan. 
  • Advising clients on replacement options, cost efficiency and technical specifications of equipment. 
  • Reviewing the workload and outsource tasks that exceed internal capacity.
